What is a Cavity?

There are 3 parts of a tooth.

The Enamel is a hard protective coating used for chewing and protecting the other parts of the tooth.

The Dentin is housing for the root.  It connects to the gums, and holds the tooth in place.

The Root is how the tooth gets blood and oxygen to help keep it healthy.

Sometimes, the Enamel on a tooth gets worn away or damaged.  When this happens, there is nothing protecting the Dentin from acids in food, or from bacteria in the mouth.  These substances can seep into the hole in the Enamel and damage the Dentin, causing pain in the mouth, and spots on the tooth.
Cavities can even form under the gum line.  In this case, there is usually no visible signs of decay.  Pain, or discomfort with hot or cold substances is the only indication of the cavity until an X-Ray is taken.
What Can Be Done?

Damage to Enamel will not heal on its own.  The damaged areas of the Dentin must be excavated, usually by drilling out the bad spots.  Then, using a dental compound, the hole can be filled in.  The patch will be polished and stained to match the color and texture of your other teeth.
